Author: Why bother having a resume? via Sorry, folks, you still need a resume
If you’re really good, you don’t need a resume. The only reason I have one is because occasionally someone ASK me for one specifically. Gotta have something to hand them. But, I can honestly say I have not used a resume to get a contract in at least 5 years and probably only handed one out 3 times in the last 10 years.
A couple of thoughts did go through my head as I read the article:
- How many people really think they are so good they don’t need a resume?
- How many people really ARE so good they don’t need a resume?
- How many people are looking for anything more than a job?
I would bet that most people are happy with any job. Don’t REALLY think they are the best available person available for what they do and even fewer really are so good they could pull off getting a position without a resume.
You’ve been Brainwashed
And this is because, as Seth says, “you’ve been brainwashed into acting like you’re sort of ordinary.”
And how have you been brainwashed? Well, you are thinking in categories. Are you the best programmer? Of course not. Best designer? Best, manager?
For the last year or so, I’ve been struggling with what to answer people who ask me what I do for a living. If I tell them I’m a programmer, that doesn’t include the coaching and SEO work that I do. If I tell them I’m a .NET Coach, I have to explain what that is for the next half hour. If I tell them I’m an SEO expert, that leaves out the programming. If I tell them I do marketing, that leaves out a ton of stuff that I spend a good hunk of my day.
Recently, I was asked to give a presentation on writing for the web. How’s that fit with all of the other stuff I do? But, it was the writing workshop that finally helped me crystallize what it is I do.
I’m the best
I am a web specialist. And, I’m the absolute BEST Web Specialist (WebSpert?) I know. Are there guys that are better programmers? No doubt. But there are a lot more who are worse. Are there guys that know more about CSS? Sure. But, I’m one of the best at tracking down a CSS bug and getting it fixed. Better marketing people? Better SEO people?
If you look at anyone of those disciplines, you are going to find people better than me. But, you will have a very hard time finding another ME. And, that’s Seth’s point.
So, what are you the best at?
