Vista Reduced Functionality Mode nightmare…

…or what I learned over the weekend

This entire saga starts Thursday morning. I was able to get about three hours of work in when I felt the need lo reboot my computer.

When my computer came back up, I found myself in “reduced functionality mode.” I didn’t even know what reduced functionality mode was until this happened to me Since I have to expect that you don’t either, I’ll explain.

RFM (not to be confused with RTFM. which I should have done when I got this computer) is a state you can end up in for one of several reasons which I’ll cover next.  You get a blank screen with a couple dialog boxes on them and no explorer interface.  You also get one hour before you are logged out.

To Vista or XP, that is the question.

Don Reisinger, over at CNET, writes that we should all give up on Vista and just use XP with Service Pack 3.

Upgrading to Vista 64 bit

or… How I spent my weekend before the weekend before Christmas

This weekend, I decided that now would be the best time to upgrade to Vista 64 bit (from Vista 32 bit)  And, after more than 60 hours of trying, I finally decided that Vista 64 bit is not worth the effort yet.  The rest of this article outlines what I learned along the way, some things you should be sure to do PRIOR to trying an upgrade, and some pretty severe comments aimed at Microsoft for the poor upgrade experience.
